Exceptional broadside advertising print featuring the House of David "World's Champion Traveling Baseball Team." Throughout the piece the name of Mary Purnell is prominent as the "re-organizer" of the Hosue of David. Purnell was a co-founder of the House of David along with Benjamin Purnell. When Benjamin became embroiled in a sordid scandal in the 1920s and then died in 1927 Mary Purnell re-organized the New Israelite House of David also known as Mary's City of David. The House of David team was a barnstorming team playing independent teams as well as major minor and Negro League clubs. The broadside advertises games against the Penn Railroad Club in Fort Wayne Indiana and features a full team photo as well as individual photos of J. L Tally Frances Thorpe and John Tucker. Framed to a finished size of 15" x 23" the piece presents well a 2" tear visible at the center of the piece from the left edge. Very little additional wear is evident though the frame prevents us from examining the edges and reverse.
