Though surviving examples documenting it are rare the great Babe Ruth was known to have endorsed the Kaywoodie "Drinkless" brand of tobacco tobacco pipe. A large-format cardboard advertising sign featuring a uniformed Ruth endorsing the $3.50 pipe was featured in the Sotheby's Barry Halper auction in 1999. The full-page image has since been used to create many small-sized reproductions that have been sold as original; only two examples of the original are known and the small-format piece are all fakes. Presented here is a previously unknown (to us and our research helpers at least - we find expressions like "previously unknown" typically result in a litany of emails from collectors who own one) large-format advertising display featuring the mighty Babe smoking a Drinkless Kaywoodie pipe. Underneath his image is the endorsement "I never enjoyed a pipe as much as the Drinkless Kaywoodie. Now I am a regular pipe smoker." - Babe Ruth. Along the bottom of the piece is the familiar "By arrangement with Christy Walsh." The piece lithographed onto heavy board measures 15 3/4" x 24 3/4" at its widest and tallests points and is die-cut along the top in such a way that suggests it may have been a part of a much larger retail display piece perhaps one that featured a stock of the pipes themselves. Unlike the small-format Kaywoodie countertop pieces however this is unquestionably authentic a period piece lithographed onto heavy board and exhibiting considerable age-related wear including several heavy dings moderate surface soiling and a largecrease at the bottom edge. The reverse exhibits similar wear including some mild paper loss and markings that would further suggest that a cardboard backing was attached at some point perhaps an easel back or an attachment to a larger three-dimensional piece. Babe Ruth display advertising pieces are incredibly valuable and highly sought-after. This piece is clearly extremely rare its origin part of a mystery we hope an astute hobbyist well help us solve! Initially offered in our Summer 2020 auction the winning bidder did not pay his invoice so we have elected to resell it here. An outstanding piece originating from the collection of Ted Patterson.
