LATE NOTE: A scan of the MEARS LOA has been uploaded to this lot listing. Outstanding Detroit Tigers cap worn in 1966 by manager Frankie Skaff in his only season as a major league manager. Skaff managed the team for 79 games one of three managersfor the team that season. Charlie Dressen opened the season as manager but suffered a heart attack in May. While recovering from the heart attack Dressen was diagnosed with a kidney infection and died of cardiac arrest on August 10. Bob Swift took over for Dressen but fell ill during the All-Star break from what was initially thought to be food poisoning but turned out to be inoperable lung cancer. On July 14 Skaff - who had been a minor league manager and scout until becoming a Tigers coach in 1965 - took over as acting manager and finished the season. Skaff moved back into a scouting role in 1967 and continued to coach and scout for the Tigers until passing away in Towson MD in 1988. Skaff's uniform from his time in the International League with the Baltimore Orioles is presented elsewhere in this auction. This cap a New Era model 7 1/8 exhibits light wear mostly in the form of staining on the band and inner brim. Skaff has signed the brim in black marker.
