I have one to sell!
Part of the large athlete-oriented advertising campaign promoting the Lucky Strike cigarette brand that began in 1928 and continued into 1929 this colorful cardboard display pair features eventual Hall of Famers Mickey Cochrane and Jim Bottomley the 1928 MVPs of the American and National Leagues. The two die-cuts were initially part of a much larger display that featured a long cardboard center panel that pictured a game scene inset with a large pack of Lucky Strike cigarettes. All three panels are particularly rare though the display in its entirety with the full center panel is virtually impossible to find. Unlike the center panel the two end panels work extremely well as individual displays and are highly coveted as individual pieces due to their rarity as well as their outstanding display qualities. We are offering the two pieces as a pair both of which have been part of the world-class collection of display materials owned by Ted Patterson. The collection includes: Jim Bottomley Display: Measures 17" x 36 1/2" at its widest and tallest heavy die-cut cardboard display picturing slugger Jim Bottomley. The base of the display names Bottomley and credits his 1928 MVP award along with the endorsement "Toasting gives a flavor no other cigarette can equal." The sturdy piece does exhibit some signs of wear notably in the form of a pronounced grease near Bottomley's wrist as well as a surface abrasion in the background area above the letter "B" in "Bottomley." Some light professional restoration has taken place on the piecce in an apparent repair near the crease at his wrist as well as some small areas of inpainting near the base as well as the bottom edge. A nail or tack hole has been professionally repaired at Bottomley's cap and reinforced on the reverse. Bottomley's baseball bat has been reinforced and repainted as well. A crease or tear appears to have been repaired across Bottomley's knees where it connects with the base reinforced on the reverse with heavy board. Evidence of another professional repair is evident at the bottom-left corner which has been reinforced and carefully repainted. The inpainting is really only evident under blacklight. Some areas of double-sided tape on the reverse along with paper loss and remnants from the original cardboard mount are evident. A price of $80.00 is written in pencil on the reverse as well from a time when such a valuable display could be had for such a low price. Mickey Cochrane Display: Measures 19 1/2" x 28 1/2" at its widest and tallest heavy die-cut cardboard advertising display featuring Mickey Cochrane. Similar to the base of the Bottomley display Cochrane's name and 1928 MVP credentials are listed along with the endorsement "That toasted flavor sure hits the right spot always."
