Outstanding Spalding pro-model bat dating to 1917-24 featuring Daubert's name engraved on the barrel in block letters. Measuring 34.5" and weighing in at a bulky 37.6 ounces the dark brown ash bat exhibits excessive use with numerous ball and cleat marks on the barrel. Uncracked the bat does have a small chip missing from the knob. Still in overall outstanding condition particularly given its age. Daubert was an exceptional ballplayer owner of a 15-yeara career with Brooklyn and Cincinnati that included a lifetime batting average of .303 a .360 on base percentage and 251 lifetime stolen bases. A Pennsylvania native who literally used his baseball skill to escape the mines he won two batting titles and received the Chalmers Award in 1913. Daubert was one of the most well-respected players of his era. Oddly enough Daubert excelled well into his 30s batting .281 in 405 at bats at 40 years of age. Sadly after a string of symptoms thought to be related to an early-season beaning Daubert passed away on October 2 1924 while still an active player. Spalding brand bats such as this with a block-letter "SPALDING" at the centerbrand and the player's name in block letters on the barrel were produced only for the named player. As such this bat was undoubtedly produced by Spalding for Daubert. Daubert bats are very rare; PSA/DNA has only assessed three others. All three measure between 34 and 35 inches in length and weigh between 35.1 and 43.3 ounces. This example unquestionably manufactured for Daubert falls within an acceptable range used by Daubert during the labeling period. These characteristics have resulted in an assessed grade of GU 8 by John Taube of PSA/DNA. An exceptionally rare bat manufactured for an outstanding player for his era who died while still a productive player.
