The H804-11 Cosack & Co. trade cards are among the more popular of all the 19th Century trade card issues a 9-card set that features colorfully illustrated cards featuring generic images of baseball players framed inside a bright blue border. Each image represents a different position on the baseball field though there is no card for "right field" as the set includes a "batsman" isntead. As is the case with most trade card issues these cards were printed on a lighter stock making them condition sensitive. They were produced by Cosack & Company a Buffalo-based lithographer and feature delightful illustrations on postcard-sized paper the interesting illustration lending the set its popularity. The cards like all advertising trade cards were printed and sold to different sponsors who applied their advertising message on both the front and back of each card. The most frequently found of these advertisers is the New Jersey clothier Marshall & Ball. Because of this many refer to the cards as the "Marshall & Ball" set. The reality however is that there are multiple advertisers found to have used these cards to convey their message. Presented here are five different cards each featuring the Marshall & Ball advertisement on both the front and b acl of the card. Featuring the pitcher first baseman shortstop left fielder and catcher the five cards all boast excellent eye appeal but do exhibit varying degrees of wear including light wrinkling edge wear (including some minor tears in places common for the issue) light pencil writing and glue staining on the reverse and perhaps a slight trim again common with the issue. The pitcher card does exhibit a heavy crease more visible on the back than the front. Five cards total each boasting strong visual qualities.
