Exceptional 1941 Playball card obtained in person among several other signed Ted Williams cards featured in this auction. A fact well-known by collectors of autographed cards is that the hobby was not always as enthusiastic about signed cards as it is today. In fact throughout much of hobby history autographed cards were typically frowned upon as the autograph ruined the condition of he card! Back in the pre-internet days of the hobby prewar cards in exceptional condition were difficult to come by and a 1941 Playball card as clean and sharp as this was considered quite a find. So imagine the reaction when our consignor brought this beautiful card to the Splendid Splinter (along with the others in this auction) and asked for his autograph! For years this card remained in this collection and was virtually always greeted with the same response: "How could you ask him to sign such a beautiful card? Why not just ask him to sign a baseball instead?" Over the years the hobby has caught up with our consignor and now recognizes the scarcity of signed cards - especially attractive ones. This stunning example has been graded EX/MT 6 by PSA with the blue ballpoint signature grading MINT 9! A truly spectacular card it is one of just eight signed examples authenticated by PSA and by far the highest-graded (the next closest is a 4.5). Combined with the extraordinarily high-grade signature this is truly a wonderful find.
