Nearing the end of his career Hall of Famer Dan Brouthers lasted just five games with the Baltimore Orioles before being sold to the Louisville Colonels where he would play 24 more games. His 1894 season with Baltimore was closer to his typical standards those 1894 Orioles were one of the great teams of all-time featiuring Hall of Famers behind the plate (Wilbert Robinson) at first (Brouthers) shortstop (Hugh Jennings) third base (John McGraw) and two outfield ppositions (Willie Keeler and Joe Kelley). The portrait photo in his Mayo's Cut Plug card was initially issued depicting Brouthers in an Orioles jersey likely printed in 1894 and not 1895 as typically attributed. Comparing this card to the example depicting Brouthers with the Lousiville team with which he spent 1895 one can see differences in print quality this example a deep rich black. The card has been graded VG/EX 4 by SGC but like most of the other N300 cards featured in this auction the card presents far better than the assigned grade. Deep black borders accentuate the crisp photo some minor edge and corner chipping reduces the technical grade of the card without impacting visual appeal. A stunning card of a key Hall of Famer.
