Outstanding Waldon & Smith cabinet photo picturing Dick Johnston wearing the uniform of the Boston Reds of the Player's League. Johnston played just two games with the Boston team joining the Player's League team for the season but quickly becoming the subject of rumors he was unhappy and would be leaving the team to return to the Beaneaters where he had starred from 1886 through 1889. Midway through April Johnston sprained his ankle badly while sliding into home and after he returned he simply wasn't used. On June 4 he was given permission to jump to Buck Ewing's New York Giants of the Player's League where he would finish out the season. In 1891 he rejoined King Kelly as a mamber of Kelly's Killers of the American Association but by the end of the 1892 season he was out of professional baseball. This photo of him in his Boston uniform had to have been taken some time between April and May of 1890 really the only time he was with the team. The quality of the image is excellent with crisp clean contrast. Some wear is evident at the mount along with some paper chipping and a more pronounced corner ding at the bottom right. Pencil writing on the reverse incorrectly identifies him as second baseman Billy Nash. A tremendous cabinet photo featuring one of Boston's 19th Century stars who moved to the fledgling Player's League where he played under both King Kelly and Buck Ewing the two most famous catchers of the era.
