Among those players not currently enshrined in the Hall of Fame few names garner more support than Gil Hodges. A lifetime .273 hitter with 370 home runs Hodges played for 18 seasons (mostly with the Dodgers) during which time he played in eight All-Star games topping 30 home runs six times. As a manager he led the New York Mets to their first World Series title in the improbable 1969 season. More importantly he was one of the most respected figures in the game among teammates and opponents alike. After his passing Arthur Daley of the New York Times wrote "He was such a noble character in so many respects that I believe Gil to have been one of the finest men I met in sports or out of it." He was unquestionably one of the game's great men. Presented here is the third of Hodges' three Gold Glove Awards for his work during the 1959 season. Hodges played virtually all of his games at first base a total of 952.1 innings with just eight errors in 965 chances. He was considered one of the best defensive first basemen of his era an attribute often discussed when making a case for his Hall of Fame credentials. Hodges' Gold Glove award has never before been offered at auction. The beautiful award is composed of a gold-painted Rawlings glove stamped "National League All-Star Fielding Team" as well as a gold-colored baseball engraved with the season. A wooden baseball diamond with a gold engraved ballfield serves as a backdrop all three affixed to a heavy wooden base all measuring 16" x 15" with a depth just shy of 7". The engraved plate mounted to the base reads "1B - Gil Hodges - The Sporting News National League All-Star Fielding Team." The entire piece presents extremely well with a light patina on the gold-colored baseball and some mild wear at the base particularly noticeable around the baseball and the bracket where the glove itself mounts. A tiny chip clearly from long ago is visible on the first base corner of the baseball diamond. Three small gold mounting screws at the reverse of the piece and one mounting bolt on the base are not original to the piece immaterial in terms of display or visual appeal. An incredibly desirable award a beautiful display and homage to an icon of New York Sports a highly-coveted artifact from a favorite of fans and players alike.
