Spectacular cardboard display sign advertising Mail Pouch Tobacco. Manufactured by Bloch Brothers Tobacco Company the Mail Pouch brand was a popular brand of chewing tobacco advertised primarily on more than 20 000 barns and on the walls of businesses in the Ohio River Valley. Occasionally the barns can be found still standing in various parts of the countryside as this form of advertising was used between 1891 and 1992 with barn owners receiving up to $40 per year for the advertising plus a fresh coat of paint when needed. This large 21" x 34" cardboard advertising poster dates to the 1950s but is meant to look much older depicting a 19th Century baseball game and higlighting the toughness and quickness required to play baseball concluding with the advertising statement "Today the quick thinkers in business and sport chew MAIL POUCH TOBACCO." Clean and colorful the piece has been dry-mounted with cellophane to a foamcore backing and appears to be in EX condition. Closer examination reveals small spots of restoration notably inpainting at the bottom-right corner. A repaired tear is evident in the center of the piece along with several tiny barely perceptible holes. Overall the restoration appears to impact about 5% of the piece most notably around the edges tastefully done and primarily perceptible at the lower-right. An outstanding display piece advertising an historic American brand.
