I have one to sell!
One of the more interesting T206 printing anomalies we have ever seen: a collector-grade example of Admiral Schlei's "catching" pose seemingly with a United Cigars underprint in the reverse of the card. Featured on the T38 Aviators nonsports cards the United Cigar brand was related to a chain of cigar stores that initially opened in 1901 as a tobacco wholesaler but eventually evolved into a chain of almost 3 000 stores including one in the first floor of New York's famous Flatiron Building. After a period of growth it was eventually acquired and the company eventually was forced to declare bankruptchy during the depression though the company remained active for many years and is still a brand today. It is difficult to exmpain this card because the red printing of the Sweet Caporal advertisement appears to be printed on top of the faded United Cigars logo. However paper loss on the reverse is evident which we would imagine would disrupt the "underprint " if that was indeed what this logo was. Despite this we also struggle with how if the logo was printed or stamped over the Sweet Caporal logo and subsequently faded how there would be no fading to the naturally-printed reverse of the card. Of course we reviewed the card with printing specialists and were unable to arrive at any conclusive opinion. Under magnification even extreme magnification we are unable to offer an opinion. As such we will simply offer the card as a unique anomaly perhaps a fluke of the printing process perhaps the remnants of a stamp applied after printing but certainly something we are unable to explain. For collectors attending this year's National we will have the card available in our booth for your examination.
