Among the often overlooked rarities of the hobby are the vintage scorecards from the late 19th and early 20th Centuries. Over our past several auctions we have featured a number of them and from their escalating prices it appears that the hobby is beginning to discover not only their rarity but how interesting they truly are. This example is fully-scored illustrating a game between the Cleveland Blues and Boston Red Stockings that took place on June 14 1879 at Boston's South End Grounds. In the game Cleveland beat the Red Stockings by a score of 3-2. Jim McCormick was the pitcher that day for Cleveland en route to an insane record of 20 wins and 40 losses in 546 innings pitched. The team's second baseman was a 21-year-old Jack Glasscock playing in his rookie season at the very beginning of a 17-year pro career. Glasscock appears to have gone 1-for-4 in that day as Cleveland's hitting stars for the day were shortstop Tom Carey outfielder Billy Riley and pitcher McCormick. For the Red Stockings hitting appears to have been led by shorstop Sadie Houck (playing in place of Ezra Sutton who moved to third to cover John Morrill who played first to cover for Ed Cogswell not in the game that day). Houck collected three of the team's six hits. Tommy Bond pitched that day for the Boston teams en route to a 43-19 record for 1879. The scorecard is simply wonderful measuring 5 5/8" by almost 7 1/4" produced by Horace Partridge & Co. The front of the scorecard offers an advertisement for the Eagle Clothing Company along with league standings just 20 games into the season. The entire front of the card contains very elegant notations handwritten faintly in pencil. The reverse is very neatly and completely scored in pencil the team lineups printed on the card the design of which is credited to Wright Howland & Mahn the sporting goods company co-owned by baseball founding father Harry Wright. A fantastic piece in outstanding condition one of the earliest baseball-related items we have handled.
