Spectacular oversized cabinet photo of Chicago outfielder Matty McIntyre dated to 1911 due to the piping on his cap. Taken by the great Cleveland photograph Louis Van Oyen this gelatin silver photo measures 7 7/8" x 9 3/4" inside the 11" x 12 1/2" mount. Van Oyen's stamp is present on the reverse of the mount. Interestingly McIntyre's glove has a large hole in the palm; some players removed the palms of their gloves to make it easier to catch the ball (at the expense of the beating taken by the player's hand). The photo is spectacular; silvering is not as visible as the scan would indicate (the light reflections of the scanner bulb and our photographic equipment reflects off the silver giving the appearance of a lighter image). The image contrast is actually quite exceptional the detail incredibly strong as the detail in individual blades of grass McIntyre's shoes and even the fabric of his socks are easily visible. Van Oyen original photos are quite desirable. This is however the first cabinet photo from Van Oyen that we have ever encountered. This is a huge photo and is in outstanding condition. The mount does exhibit some wear as one would expect. The most visible wear to the mount is visible in the lower-left corner which is clipped. The clipped corner however is included with the photo and could be easily reattached by a quality paper conservator. Aside from that light wear is visible on the front with some written notations and moderate foxing present on the reverse. A wonderful rarity an enormous cabinet photo from famed photographer Louis Van Oyen.
