Exceptional team photo of the 1916 World's Champion Boston Red Sox mounted in a cabinet-style display promoting Stag brand sweaters. One of the more rare and interesting pieces we have offered for sale in recent memory the photo features Hall of Famers Harry Hooper and Herb Pennock of course but it is the presence of a young Babe Ruth sitting cross-legged next to the batboy in the front row that makes the photo itself truly special. While an example of a similar photo alone sold in our Fall 2017 auction for $9 000 it is the advertising display mount that adds considerable rarity to the piece. One of only a handful of examples known the 11x9 decorative mount features a two-color design the players identified in red type under the photo itself. The entire piece has been professionally matted and framed within an attractive 16" x 14" presentation. In this context it is without a doubt one of the finest of the few surviving examples of this piece. In terms of technical grade the photo itself appears excellent though a close inspection reveals several mild surface abrasions and what appears to be very slight and insignificant restoration work done to the photo impacting an extremely small percentage of the overall image. The mount exhibits moderate wear its edges obscured by the matting as is the red border found around the edge of the photo though close inspection reveals some slight paper loss along the right edge. Internet research on this piece indicates that bidders should expect wear around the edges along with some moderate paper loss along the right edge and some slight loss along the bottom likely from vintage framing. All of this however is obscured by the elegant framing job leaving some very minor wear and tear near the bottom left. The photo itself is in outstanding condition well-protected by the mount. Otherwise very light soiling is evident certainly nothing to detract from the outstanding appearance of both the photo and its decorative mount. Given the extreme rarity and beauty of the piece the condition flaws are minor mentioned here for the sake of accuracy. The Stag Sweaters Red Sox display photo has increased significantly in desirability and profile due in part to the extraordinary rise in prices for early Ruth items and due as well to a recent high-dollar public sale of a similar piece at public auction. An extremely rare and highly desirable early Ruth piece one of the finest in existence.
