I have one to sell!
Issued by the George Frost Company of Boston and distributed one card per box of 12 garters the Boston Garter card set is a 16-card set that is considered one of the most beautiful ever produced. One of the few card issues with desirability to match its rarity it is often said that the cards themselves are so rare that it is only the presence of a printed checklist on the card backs that enables us to understand that the set featured one member of each of the league's 16 teams. Each card depicts the subject in his team's dugout sans pants (thus showing off those Boston Garters) teammates warming in the background. Today somewhere in the neighborhood of 25 specimens from the set are known to exist. Even more rare than the cards themselves are the 21 x 11" cardboard advertising posters designed to promote the products and the cards. With each of the posters featuring two "actual size" representations of the cards possession of an advertising poster is tantamount to owning two cards from the set. The posters are extraordinarily rare with fewer than ten examples known to exist many featuring different combinations of players. Presented here is one of just two examples of the advertising poster featuring Hughie Jennings and Johnny Kling we have found in our research an extraordinarily colorful and high-quality piece. Exhibiting wear commensurate with its intended use the front presents far better than any technical grade we could assess the bulk of the wear resstricted to the edges - likely from being housed in some sort of frame. Color is exceptional as the Boston Garter advertising posters - as well as the cards themselves - were produced with amazing attention to quality. Individual cards from the 1912 Boston Garter set routinely reach the five-figure threshhold with Hall of Famers stretching far north of that mark. Despite regularly eclipsing the $25 000 mark when offered at public auction (this very example realized $27 000 at auction two years ago) it remains our opinion that their extreme desirability incredible rarity and extraordinary quality rank 1912 Boston Garter advertising posters among the great values in the hobby. In an era where high-grade rookie cards of postwar Hall of Famers stretch into six-figure territory a 1912 Boston Garter advertising poster - with existing known examples numbering in the single digits - is an extremely worthwhile investment. PLEASE NOTE: After discussion with our consignor we have elected to REMOVE the reserve on this item. Therefore it is now being sold with NO RESERVE.
