One of the most fun things about the prewar hobby is the occasional accidental discovery of new variations errors or in some cases an entire new potential card set. Such is the case with this Pinkerton Rube Oldring and a discussion that has slowly been developing on the Network 54 Baseball board here. This 1913-15 Pinkerton appears to be one of the odd blank-backed Pinkerton photos referenced in this thread (and sold at auction in a different lot late last year). The card featuring Athletics outfielder Rube Oldring is the same size as a blank-backed Pinkerton scorecard but has thicker borders and is a silver-gelatin photograph. Some time ago we sold a similar card of Chief Bender theorizing at the time that we were selling a Pinkerton photo that had been removed from its T5 mount. The card was printed on photographic paper with a blank back and had a spot of paper loss on the top of the reverse as if the paper had peeled away when the item was removed from the cardboard backing. The thread on Net54 began to take shape after that auction as more people chimed in with their own similar examples - all featuring members of the Philadelphia Athletics. What we believe now was that the Bender in our past auction - and this Oldring as well - are from an extremely scarce third subset of Pinkertons a photographic issue including only members of the Philadelphia Athletics. The thread on Network54 makes it relatively clear - and also shows how a hobby community can solve problems when it comes together and shares information. The card presents as EX a similar spot of glue residue on the reverse.
