With early images of Babe Ruth remaining the most popular and desirable items in the hobby and Type 1 photos seemingly increasing in popularity by the day a 1916 Boston Red Sox photo picturing the smiling future Hall of Famer front row center near the team mascot is one of the more exciting pieces we have offered for recent sale. While the 1916 team captured the World Championship with considerable firepower that included future Hall of Fame outfielder Harry Hooper rookie pitcher Herb Pennock and stars like Dick Hoblitzell Jack Barry Everett Scott Duffy Lewis Carl Mays and Dutch Leonard it was Ruth who stole the show both then and now winning 23 games with a 1.75 ERA while clouting 3 home runs - his prodigous home run power just beginning to make itself known. The 7x5" photo is clean and crisp with edge wear consistent with its use including small tears and emulsion cracking along with some minor wrinkling as commonly seen with photos of this vintage. The team name/year and a serial number "4016-8" are noted atop the photo (markings we have seen with every example of this photo we have encountered) and the Culver Pictures stamps and editorial notes are present on the reverse. A full LOA from PSA/DNA attests to its Type 1 nature. One of the finest and most attractive early Babe Ruth photos we have seen.
