Spectacular team image of the 1892 Bates College Baseball Team. Positioned around a sign being held up by one of the players the sign appears to be gloating an 8-0 shutout of the 1893 team. Written on the sign in addition to the 8-0 score is "White-Wash" "Mum's the word " "Blud! Blud!" and the ultimate kicker "Siss-te-ah-de-ri-co-boo! Ninety-two!" The nine players are wearing the most bizarre uniforms we can recall featuring what appears to be cutoff-sleeve T-shirts with the "Bates" name sewn onto the breast. Seven of the players are wearing polka-dot pillbox caps. The other two subjects are wearing long-sleeved striped turtlenecks while one - ostensibly the pitcher - dons a high top hat. One player in the center holds in one hand a bouquet of flowers. The Bates College photo archives describes this photo as depicting the sophomores of the Class of 1892 after defeating the 1893 class. Players are identified from left to right as FRONT ROW: McFadden Sawyer Skelton; REAR: Wilson Little Putnam Emery Walter and Donnocker. The photo itself appears in EX to EX-MT condition with some mild wear and while the mount has endured some wear over the years the presentation remains strong. Weird old baseball team photos are among our favorite collectibles and this is one of the best.
