One can easily get lost in the process of digging up information on the myriad of small amateur and semipro leagues that dotted the country in the early part of the century. Such was the case as we sought to learn more about the Greek Catholic League of 1922 the championship of which is represented by this handsome silver-plated cup. Measuring 11" high at its highest point by 9 1/2" in width it is a regal-looking piece adorned with figural baseball bats and balls a similar piece to the trophies presented to similar teams around the country at the time. Our research indicates that while the Taylor Knights of St. George were a formidable group the 1922 championship was actually won by the Jessup team creating a mystery around this particular cup that we were eager to solve. Astonished to discover the clock read 4AM after hours of scouring Scranton-area newspapers from 1922 we elected to let the winning bidder learn more about the league that bestowed this beautiful cup on what appears to be the second-place team. Still the engraving on the cup reads "Reach Trophy - Championship - Greek Catholic League - Season 1922 - Won By - Knights St. George - Taylor " so it must be true. What we do know is that the trophy was manufactured by the Van Bergh Silver Plating Company of Rochester a well-known brand among silver and antique collectors today and was presented by Henry W. Reinhart longtime owner of a sporting goods store in Scranton. The cup remains in outstanding condition today a fine specimen and a very desirable sports artifact from the early part of the 20th Century.
