Issued by the Henry Clay and Bock & Co. of Havana circa 1913. The Henry Clay brand refers to a cigar named after the American politician Henry Clay. Created in the 1840s by Cuban tobacco businessman Julian Alvarez the business was transferred to a British Company founded in 1888 called the Henry Clay and Bock & Co. These pinbacks were distributed with tobacco products in Cuba around 1913 and feature a variety of humorous and topical cartoons. Burdick assigned the designation P42 to these pins listing them as "Comic Subjects/Cuba Issue." These pinbacks are particularly scarce certainly difficult to find in groups this large. More than 200 pinbacks are included in this lot varying wildly in terms of condition. Each of the 7/8" pinbacks features a cartoon illustration along with a humorous or topical Spanish phrase. While most of the illustrations are printed on a white background some are printed on green or yellow backgrounds. Some of the phrases along with the accompanying illustrations are hysterical. This is a scarce and valuable collection of pinbacks produced in Cuba around the turn of the century and given away with the purchase of the Henry Clay brand of Cuban Cigar.
