The Portsmouth Cobblers were champions of the Ohio State League in 1912 a strong hitting team led by Homer Cain as well as future major league infielder Ed Conwell pitchers Ed Donalds and Frank harter and outfielder Billy Southworth. Southworth would go on to hit .297 across 13 major league seasons but it was his skill as a manager that earned him recognition. His St. Louis Cardinals teams won 95 games or better for five consecutive seasons during the WWII years capturing three pennants and two World Championships. Proving that not to be a fluke he moved to the Bostom Braves and helmed that team from 1946 through 1951 capturing the 1948 pennant as well. Pictured in the middle row of this team photo second from left Southworth is just a young lad decades ahead of his first stint as a major league manager a year from his first major league game and six years ahead of 1918 when he would finally become a regular player in the majors. The photo taken by V.E. Fowler depicts the following players: FRONT ROW L-R: Pete Childs Emmett Cain Marshall (first name unknown). MIDDLE ROW L-R: Ed Donalds Billy Southworth John Weinberg Frank Harter. BACK ROW L-R: Ed Conwell James Edwards Charles Beers Homer Cain Lester Hartwig John Baggan. Including its mount the photo measures 12" x just shy of 10" with the photo itself presenting as EX condition despite two small spots of green paint at the top and bottom center. The green paint is also visible elsewhere on the mount as are some surface abrasions discoloration and overall wear. A tremendous original "pre-rookie" photo of a future Hall of Famer.
