Last spring an article appeared on Forbes Magazine's website that described an 1887 Tomlinson Detroit Wolverines cabinet that we received on consignment from the family of Charles "Pretzels" Getzien. The cabinet was attractive and had excellent provenance and despite a trimmed border sold for $2 000 in our Spring auction. It was that article that attracted the attention of a family from Canada who was in possession of a similar - but much nicer - cabinet. When we received the consignment we were thrilled by the image quality and immediately sent the cabinet off to SGC for grading where it received a grade of VG 40. The cabinet is a stunning one containing four Hall of Famers - Dan Brouthers Sam Thompson Ed Hanlon and Deacon White. The 1886/1887 Wolverines are among the most revered of 19th Century teams and this particular cabinet is among the finest that we have seen. Image quality is clear and strong with excellent contrast and the Tomlinson advertising information is clear and legible. Despite some minor discoloring along the mount the primary condition issues relate to overall corner and edge wear consistent with the grade. Simply a beautiful cabinet from a well-known studio depicting composite images of one of the 19th Century's great teams.
