The second of two spectacular N172 Old Judge cards featured in this auction that were sold to a prominent hobby dealer at the 2016 National in Atlantic City by a noncollector this example is in many ways even finer than the other despite the lower technical grade. SGC's assessment of this card being in EX condition is related largely to softer corners though the card's overall eye appeal renders the degree of corner wear largely irrelevant. Posed as if to catch a "fly ball" just at the top of the card infielder Dick Phelan is depicted in unbelievable detail the finest we have seen. Phelan's handlebar mustache his belt loops and buckle even the wrinkles in his shoe leather are plainly visible in the tiny photograph. Simply a magnificent example of an Old Judge a bright bold photo with image contrast that is simply incredible for the issue. Quite simply the finest image quality in any 19th Century photograph issue we have ever seen.
