Tremendous 3 1/2" x 6" booklet of "Who's Who around the big league diamonds" of 1916. Published by Gillette with room on the reverse for a local Gillette retailer to imprint their address information the booklet is an excellent pocket guide to pro baseball in 1916 providing information about each team their management statistical information from 1915 (sandwiched around some advertising for Gillette products) a page with photos of 12 1916 All-Stars and a page on the "origin of baseball" (Gillette gives the credit to Alexander Cartwright as opposed to Abner Doubleday). The twelve All-Stars depicted are Home Run Baker Rabbit Maranville Tris Speaker Ty Cobb Joe Jackson Eddie Collins Dick Rudolph Stuffy McInnis Frank Snyder Walter Johnson "The Great" Alexander and Dutch Leonard. The piece is in excellent condition with some minor spots of rust caused by the aging of the staples at the spine. Some very minor creasing exists on the cover particularly at the top left corner. Pocket-sized pieces like this from the turn of the century are fascinating to us mostly because of the unique ways that data is organized to save space. The photos in this instance are a treasure an amazing collectible that blends historical stats photography and product advertising into a single piece.
