Often incorrectly called Gold Medal Flour cards the R313A issue from Gold Medal Foods Inc. of Minneapolis was a group of 3 1/4" by 5 3/8" cards issued to commemorate the great Cardinals/Tigers World Series of 1934. Redeemable by mail in groups of four the 12-card set featured six cards from each team a total of five Hall of Famers. This is an outstanding and often overlooked card issue one that is extremely condition-sensitive simply due to the oversized nature of the cards and the way that they were redeemed.Presented here are two spectacular examples each with an unfortunately low technical grade but a stunning overall look. Cardinals pitcher Paul Dean (SGC FAIR 20) and Tigers catcher Mickey Cochrane (HOF - SGC GOOD 30) are represented here in cards that on the surface look like easy NM or higher cards. Sharp corners strong centering and outstanding image quality are represented in both cards. They are beautiful. Unfortunately flip them over and you"ll find both cards have been subject to strange wear on the reverse - possibly simple surface wear possibly scrapbook damage. SGC was particularly harsh on the wear as they tend to be tough on back damage and other types of residue added to cards.Still these are two outstanding examples from a difficult set two of the nicest cards you"ll find. Gold Medal Foods cards are typically found in mid grades at best and these two examples bear all the hallmarks of high grade cards - except the pristine reverse.
