The T205 Christy Mathewson is among the most recognizable in the entire T205 set and the Mathewson portrait featured on the card is among the best-known images of "Big Six" in the sports memorabilia hobby. Mathewson one of the most revered figures in prewar sports history is also one of the key cards in the T205 Gold Border set."Gold Border" being a relative term some T205s have over the years lost some of the distinctive gold paint around their borders resulting in a dull gold or almost green tint. Other T205s have recently discovered that have never even had the gold borders applied instead only featuring dark green borders. A large lot of such cards in very low grade recently sold for a premium at auction. It is our belief that the borders of this Mathewson may have once contained gold but the gold paint has worn away with time. Under a jeweler"s loupe we feel that we can see very feint flecks of gold. However we also are fortunate to have a relatively large lot of approximately 100 low to mid-grade T205s with which to compare this Mathewson and we can say that no other T205s in our possession has a border with gold as faded as this.Suffice to say however that this is an outstanding representation of a key T205 card with normal edge corner and surface wear consistent with the grade.Population data:SGC Population: 140 total graded 28 at this level 47 higherPSA Population: 507 total graded 96 at this level 123 higher**Note that unlike SGC PSA does not categorize T205s by back variety in their population report.
