Another iconic card of a key Hall of Famer from the classic T205 set. Many collectors feel that the T205 set is the most beautiful prewar sets of the 20th Century; this card of the "Big Train" is among his most popular. As with its T206 cousins the T205 set has several varieties of back artwork with each variety representing a different ATC cigarette brand. This particular card features the Sovereign back described by author Shawn Adkins as the 7th most scarce of the set"s 12 different back varieties including the ultra-rare blank back (see the article"Discovering the T205 Gold Border Set" from the Spring 2007 issue of SGC Collector magazine. In Adkins" research Sovereign ad backs accounted for just 8% of all the T205 cards he catalogued. This is a collector-grade example of a tough Hall of Famer and key card from this beautiful set. While the card does possess all the attributes of a "GOOD" graded card this is still very presentable with excellent eye appeal for the grade. The card"s major flaw is a heavy diagonal crease across the top of the card. That the crease does not touch Johnson"s face adds to the card"s eye appeal. This is an excellent opportunity to pick up an affordable example of a high-end card from a popular prewar set.Population data:SGC Population: 15 graded copies 4 at this level 10 higherPSA Population: 237 graded copies 38 at this level 156 higher**Please note that unlike SGC PSA does not catalog back varieties within the T205 set. As such the SGC population data above reflects only those Johnson cards graded with a Sovereign back while the PSA data encompasses all graded Walter Johnsons.
