Elegantly mounted in a 13" x 17" x 2 1/2" shadowbox-type frame this 1910-era "team captains" fan is one of the more interesting collectibles of its era. These fans printed on heavy paper also included blank scorecards and were affixed by staple to a wooden handle. The fans that were used commercially also contained printed advertisements on the reverse typically for local businesses. The fan contains images of the team captains some of the most popular players of the day including Germany Schaeffer Bobby Wallace (HOF) Billy Sullivan Hal Chase George Moriarty Harry Lord Harry Davis Nap Lajoie (HOF) Mickey Doolin (misspelled) Calvin Griffith (HOF) Bill Dahlen Bill Sweeney Frank Chance (HOF) Art Devlin Fred Clarke (HOF misspelled) and Roger Bresnahan (HOF). In 1910 this was a dual-use piece: it was intended to be used to keep spectators cool during the game and it was intended to serve as a game scorecard. As a result these are typically found with writing tears staples tape significant edge wear broken handles and more. This particular example has been scored though the scorekeeping has either been erased or faded with time. The piece presents in VG/EX condition with what appears to be minor creasing throughout along with wear to the die-cut edges and general age-related soiling. The framing makes it impossible for us to assess the condition of the reverse or to identify any potential advertisements that might be visible there. An amazing relic in incredible condition featuring multiple Hall of Famers.
