Approx. 3.5" x 5" news service photograph of Boston Red Sox star hurler, Smoky Joe Wood. Wood appears here likely during his rookie season of 1909, an attribution supported by both his youthful appearance and the laced collar style of his uniform which was phased out in 1910. Wood was only a few short years away from playing a significant role in two Red Sox championship runs, posting an astonishing 34-5 record with a 1.91 ERA for the 1912 club and going 15-5 for the 1915 champs. Photo appears to be a contact print with superb image quality and a rough cut to the left edge of paper. Verso of displays a "Filed Before 1919" stamp along with several handwritten notations. Authenticated and encapsulated as a Type 1 photo by PSA/DNA.
