Grouping of 19 glass magic lantern slides depicting the 1914 Cleveland Naps at spring camp in Athens, GA. An impressively clean grouping overall with high quality, crisp images that present magnificently well. Black paper borders surrounding the 3.25" x 4" translucent slides remain fully intact, handsomely framing each scene. A small paper label remains affixed to lower-right corner of most, presumably for numbering purposes, though no markings are present. Included 1) Fun image of Naps players spelling the word "NAP" while sitting on a set of bleachers. Close inspection reveals Shoeless Joe Jackson to be player second from left in top row. A related image was published in the April 5, 1914 issue of the Cleveland Plain Dealer (provided for reference). 2) Jack Graney batting 3) Jack Graney portrait 4) Jack Graney's dog, Larry jumps over several players 5) Steve O'Neill portrait 6) Naps trainer Charles Hitte administering treatment 7) Ray Chapman sliding w/inscription describing how he later broke his leg 8) Naps spring training grounds 9) Several players posed in street clothes 10) Naps trainer with Larry the mascot 11) Steve O'Neill in catching pose. This slide has broken cleanly in half and remains borderless.

These slides originate from the estate of former Cleveland Plain Dealer staff photographer Frank W. Smith, who traveled with the Cleveland Naps to their spring facilities for many years during the 1910's. 19 of close to 60 glass magic lantern slides offered in our spring auction from the original photographer's collection. All slides from this collection have been professionally imaged and winning bidders will receive both the slides and a one-of-a-kind 8" x 10" archival quality print with their shipment.

Please note: the broken slide depicting Speaker and Coveleski has been scanned by our digital artist and a fully restored 8"x 10" print of this image will be included.
