Breathtaking 1914 glass magic lantern slide depicting Joseph Walker Jackson, "Shoeless Joe," sliding into home plate at League Park in Cleveland. Splashes of color have been added to the image via hand-tinting, with Hall of Fame umpire Billy Evans ready to make the call behind the action. Our research into this image leads us to believe the Naps are playing the Chicago White Sox on Sept. 5, 1914, with this game serving as a makeup after the previous day's contest was postponed due to frost. The empty left field stands appear to be consistent with the first game of an unscheduled doubleheader, on a cold day in September, when Jackson's Naps hadn't been in contention for weeks. Black paper border surrounding the 3.25" x 4" translucent slide remains fully intact with some soiling resting on the glass surface, unobtrusive to the central image. Slide originates from the estate of former Cleveland Plain Dealer staff photographer Frank W. Smith, who traveled with the Cleveland Naps to their spring facilities for many years during the 1910's. One of close to sixty glass magic lantern slides offered in our spring auction from the original photographer's collection.
