This stunning portrait shows the stoic outfielder against a crisp, green background. Rounded corners, minor chipping along the sides, and snow don't do much to detract from the gorgeous, bold colors and Congalton's black hair with the Superman blue tint. The centering is southeast on the canvas, which, along with some light staining more visible on an otherwise clean back, further explain the technical grade. SGC
has only ever graded 10 total
examples of this El Principe de Gales back version of the Congalton, with
only four receiving a
higher grade than the VG 3 offered here.
William Millar "Bunk" Congalton had a 20-year professional baseball career, playing more than 300 games at the Major League level with Chicago, Cleveland, and Boston. He is depicted here as a member of the
Columbus Senators of the American Association, where he played more than 800 games over 6 seasons between 1905 and 1912.
