The portrait of a 39-year old player in the twilight of his career graces the front of this beautifully preserved example from the T206 set. The main issue keeping this card from grading even higher than it already has is the fact that the centering is so far east on the canvas. Some light staining along the top edge and at the bottom corners are minor issues, as is some light paper loss on Doc's left cheek. Minor foxing and a light red ink smudge are the only defects on an otherwise beautiful, strong back. SGC has only ever graded 8 total
examples of this El Principe de Gales back version of the Casey, with
only one receiving a
higher grade than the VG-EX 4 offered here.
James Patrick "Doc" Casey spent the majority of his 18-year career as a third baseman, playing parts of 10 seasons in the Major Leagues between Washington, Brooklyn, Detroit, and Chicago. He is depicted here as a member of the Montreal Royals of the Eastern League, where he played 251 games in 1908 and 1909.
