We have made the decision to break up an EXTRAORDINARY 1963 Topps set - the #4 Master Set on the PSA Set Registry. The 1963 set is a particularly difficult set to complete in high grade due to Topps' poor quality control in the era which resulted in considerable print defects. The large and colorful border at the bottom simultaneously lends a distinctive design element and a condition challenge, as they are extremely susceptible to chipping and wear.

The example offered here is card #382, Ralph Houk, graded MINT 9. Houk was a 4-time World Series champion as a player, but added two more rings after his first two seasons as a manager in 1961 and 1962. Heading into 1963, the Yankees were heavy favorites to win it all again. They went 104-57 during the regular season, easily winning the AL pennant, but got run over by the freight train that was Sandy Koufax, Don Drysdale, and the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 1963 World Series.

The young manager is pictured here in the clubhouse, contemplating the day's starting lineup. Four great corners and edges on this one. Centering is slightly west on the canvas, but registration is nearly perfect. Some light color loss along the left edge of the red bottom border is common to the set, but keeps this example from grading at a 10.

Only 1 example graded by PSA has ever received a higher grade than the MINT 9 offered here.
