Interesting cabinet photo from an unidentified studio picturing Irish outfielder Sam Nicholl.  Born in 1869 in Antrim, Ireland, Nicholl (identified as Nichols on his Old Judge cards) had a very brief major league career, thanks in part to a .128 lifetime batting average.  Nichol was the subject of four different cards in the N172 issue, but this pose, clearly taken in the same photo session, is not featured on any of them.  Nichol poses as if preparing to catch a ball that hovers above him, in a pose similar to those on his #343-2 and #343-3 cards. Soiling and corner wear is evident, with ink writing visible on the reverse.  A rare photo from an unknown studio, clearly taken for the Old Judge baseball cards but not used.
