While similar in size (but square) and utilizing the same images as the E254 Colgan"s Chips the cards commonly known as "Square Proofs" are not likely "proofs." In fact they are likely an issue unto themselves perhaps somehow related to the round Colgan"s Chips issue. Some speculate that they may have been part of an advertising promotion since many are found with glue residue on the back. They are needless to say particularly rare with not all cards in the checklist having been identified as being in existence.Presented here is Charlie Babb player-manager of the Memphis Egyptians of the Southern Association. Babb a shortstop in his playing days toiled for several years in the minors before breaking in with the New York Giants in 1903. Traded to Brooklyn for Bill Dahlen Babb returned to the Southern Association and continued to play and manage until his retirement in 1913. The card graded Authentic by SGC is square and clean worn with age but still a rare possibly one-of-a-kind example of a difficult and mysterious card type.Population Data:SGC Population: 1 total graded (this one)PSA Population: none graded
