Collection of autographs related to the incredible timeless photograph documenting the United States Marines' flag raising over Iwo Jima. The historic Pulitzer prize-winning photo was taken by Joe Rosenthal and depicts five Marines and a Navy corpsman raising a flag atop Mount Suribachi during the battle. Less well-known is the fact that the prize-winning photograph was actually the second flag raising atop of Mount Suribachi that day. The first flag-raising occurred that morning after a patrol made it to the top of Suribachi. That patrol attached the flag to a water pipe and raised it at the peak at 10:20 AM that day. A photo was taken by Marine Staff Sergeant Louis R. Lowery for Leatherneck magazine. Several hours later a larger flag was attached to a larger pipe and raised at approximately 1PM. Present for that event was photographer Joe Rosenthal who captured the dramatic photo that we all know today. Presented is an 8x10 glossy print of the original flag-raising signed by Cpl. Charles W. Lindberg who is pictured standing behind Pfc James Michels who is the soldier in the foreground holding the rifle. Also included in the lot is a mailing envelope signed by Joe Rosenthal dated March 11 of 1955. The Lindberg signature is outstanding clear and dark inscribed "Charles W. Lindberg/1st Flag Raiser Iwo Jima Feb. 23 1945 10:30 A.M." The Rosenthal signature in the return address is dark and clear with several letters smudged due to what is likely water damage of some sort. Auction LOA from James Spence Authentication.
