Arguably the most important figure in sports history and undoubtedly one of the most important figures in American history Jackie Robinson remains one of the most beloved and widely-collected players in the hobby. Robinson"s reputation as a terror on the basepaths is represented in the background image on this card depicting a hustling Robinson sliding safely into home having stolen it 19 times in his legendary career. This particular example having obviously been graded in PSA"s early days is an outstanding well-centered card with bold color. The card which possesses the more common white cardboard back remains one of the keys to this popular set the final year Topps issued larger-sized cards the final year the Dodgers played in Brooklyn and sadly the final year of the great Jackie Robinson"s storied 10-year run. His career on the decline his health suffering the effects of diabetes the departing Dodgers traded Robinson to the San Francisco Giants at the end of the 1956 season. By that time however Robinson had already decided to call it quits and he publicly announced his retirement in a Look magazine article in early 1957.An outstanding example of the final card of one of the most important figures in American sport.
