The owner of Love of the Game in addition to being the owner of the auction house is also a long-time collector. Among the more eccentric elements of his collection is a large group of W575-1/E121 with the Henry Johnson Confectioners stamp on the reverse. This card is not owned by the LOTG owner - it's a consignment - but we can speak with considerable expertise about its rarity. The Henry Johnson Confectioners cards are rare to begin with. Always found in off condition the cards are difficult enough to find that a proper checklist has never been developed. It is unknown whether or not a complete set was ever produced (though we do know that the checklist mirrors the E121 Series of 80 checklist simply due to the cards we have seen or owned) nor do we know if any variations exist. An autographed Henry Johnson Confectioners card is simply something we have never seen. Jacobson was a journeyman outfielder who played eleven seasons with five different teams the majority of his career spent with the St. Louis Browns. Hailing from Illinois Jacobson (nicknamed "Baby Doll" after the song "Oh You Beautiful Doll") never played or lived in northern California (where the Henry Johnson cards were distributed) so it is our assumption that the autograph was obtained by a collector at some point after Jacobson's career had ended (the ballpoint signature is strong and bold clearly applied to the card reverse after much of the card's visible wear had already taken place). As the prices of vintage signed cards continue to skyrocket a card of this rarity is a true find - the first signed Henry Johnson we have seen and perhaps even the only one to exist.
