"The Monster" has a number of rarities that are well-known among collectors the first tier of which include the "Big Four" of Wagner Plank Magie and Doyle. The next tier of rarities in the set includes this the Ray Demmitt St. Louis variation largely considered one of the six most difficult T206 cards to obtain. When producing the baseball cards for the 1910 season most of the ATC factory issues continued to depict Demmitt as a member of the Yankees despite the fact that he was traded to the St. Louis Browns in the winter of 1909 for pitcher Lou Criger. Of all the factory issues only the Polar Bear issue included the change to depict Demmitt with his proper team. This created a significant variation within the set as the Demmitt/St. Louis variation is now considered one of the key rarities within the hobby's most widely-collected prewar issue. Adding to the challenge of course is the fact that Polar Bear cards were not well-protected from the tobacco in the packs. Being scrap tobacco as opposed to cigarettes the loose tobacco in the packages made contact with the cards inside resulting in significant staining. As a result higher-grade cards with Polar Bear backs are difficult to find. The offered T206 Demmitt St. Louis variation has been graded FAIR 20 by SGC not due to tobacco staining but due to surface creasing and corner wear consistent with the grade. The aesethetic appeal of the card however is much stronger with vivid color and very little of the tobacco-related discoloration consistent with Polar Bear backs.
