Aside from his rookie card the 1961 Topps Roger Maris is probably the most important Maris card in the hobby. Maris' 61 home runs that season broke Babe Ruth's longstanding record and coming off his 1960 MVP season (where he hit 39 home runs and drove in 112) he was a budding Yankees superstar heading into what would be his second season with the team. It became one of the most talked-about seasons of all-time a year-long race with Mickey Mantle to the title the record broken on the final day of the season. The Yankees' pennant and World Championship have almost been reduced to an afterthought especially in recent years as the era of PEDs has only increased the respect that fans have for the hallowed home run records. Marris applied his signature at thei bottom of the card in the photo in blue ballpoint. He took great care to make sure that his signature was neat (as he typically did) but also that it would display well on the card. Though the card has been well-handled (likely in GOOD condition) the print quality is strong for the issue resulting in a very attractive display. An extremely bold dark signature of the man many still feel is the single-season home run king.
