The legend of the 1957 Topps #95 Mickey Mantle makes it one of his popular and endearing cards. With Mantle finishing his powerful swing to the left side of the card an eerie image appears to his left in the background. While clearly some sort of airbrush or photo retouching issue kids in 1957 felt sure what they were seeing was the ghost of Babe Ruth looking on as the popular Yankee outfielder posed for the camera. Coming off his dominant 1956 season with the Yankees defeating Brooklyn for the World Series title it"s no wonder this card captured the imagination of young baseball fans. The key card in the beautiful 1957 Topps set the stark plain design and crisp photography puts all the emphasis on the player. This example centered perfectly left to right but slightly off from top to bottom is a knockout with the kind of slight rough cuts that while a common sign of the era also signify a natural original cut. Despite having graded nearly 200 000 cards from the 1957 Topps set PSA has graded just 25 Mantles higher than this one. That speaks volumes about the condition-sensitivity of this card since PSA has graded more copies of the Mantle than any other card in the set with more than 3 600 graded copies on record. With a clean glossy surface and a crisp reverse this is a beautiful high-grade example of one of the most famous baseball cards of the 1950s.
