The N302 Mayo"s football set of 1894 is growing in popularity largely due to a surge in popularity of vintage football. The set which closely resembles the N300 baseball set of the following year features black and white photos of football players atop an advertisement for Mayo"s Cut Plug tobacco. The black backs have no printing. This card of Robert Emmons is graded VG 40 by SGC largely due to edge chipping that is common among the black-bordered Mayos. Emmons was somewhat of a Rennaisance man playing and coaching for Harvard University between 1891 and 1895. He then became a successful banker and stockbroker who lived in Boston. In 1917 Emmons became owner of the Lawrence Barristers the Eastern League baseball team. He was also a yachtsman serving as skipper and managing owner of the Resolute when it won the America"s Cup in 1920.An excellent example of a rare commodity: a 19th Century football card.Population DataSGC Population: 17 graded 2 at this level 6 higherPSA Population: 12 graded 0 at this level 6 higher
