This shot of A.C. "Duke" Jantzen shows the peripatetic catcher poised to gather in a hanging studio baseball, something he did for a rotating cast of franchises, no doubt chasing his best opportunity to play and get paid for it, all around the country, as far west as Colorado and as far south as New Orleans. Performance records prove incomplete for Jantzen and it remains unclear when or where he was born. All five N172 poses for Duke show him as playing for Minneapolis, so it's possible he spent more time there than the partial 1889 season that Baseball Reference currently records.
The PSA GOOD 2 grade reflects its rounded and bumped corners first and foremost, with some surface flaking near those bumps. The image is somewhat light, but the nameplate text remains legible and straightforward to read. This is PSA's sole encapsulated card for 245-5, making it a special opportunity to net one of the toughest poses for this minor leaguer.
This card appears as #245-5's reference image on page 280 of the Old Judge photography book by Miller, Gonsowski, and Masson. Love of the Game is proud to offer several cards seen in their outstanding work of research and presentation as part of our 100+ N172 listings in this auction.
