This George McVey N172 offers an appealing, if unusual, "outstretched arms" pose catalogued as #321-3 by the Goodwin & Co. photography reference book. Contrast is strong enough to see a number of uniform details, including a full sleeve length almost never used on ballfields of our modern era.
Baseball Reference considers George a brief major league player indeed, with just six games logged for Brooklyn in 1885 as a 19-year-old. He carried on at lower levels of pro ball for another decade, until poor health led to his untimely death from G.I. woes at 30.
This PSA VG 3 grade reflects things common to N172, with slanted edges, modest image fading, and touched corners. Its surfaces remain cleaner than most, helping this remain at an honest low-mid level. Combined population reports show about three graded examples, making this another scarce subject offered in our auction!
This card appears as #321-3's reference image on page 324 of the Old Judge photography book by Miller, Gonsowski, and Masson. Love of the Game is proud to offer several cards seen in their outstanding work of research and presentation as part of our 100+ N172 listings.
