An infielder with a solid career across multiple leagues, James "Chippy" McGarr appears on N172 #309-2 in an almost religious fielding pose, well illuminated with visual contrast and sharp detail. Even the studio backdrop, so often a washed-out feature for Old Judge pictures, shows some flair and detail. McGarr followed his pro playing career by working the 1899 season as an NL field umpire and moved on to other pursuits thereafter.

This PSA GOOD+ 2.5 example shows clearer than most that Old Judge used real photo layers mounted on card stock, as a bit of paper on each side lies shorter than its underlayment. The top edge is a bit "chippy," and the outstanding image carries water for almost every other aspect of its appearance. PSA's population report shows this as their only graded example for #309-2, making for another tough find we're offering this summer.

This card appears as #309-2's reference image on page 318 of the Old Judge photography book by Miller, Gonsowski, and Masson. Love of the Game is proud to offer several cards seen in their outstanding work of research and presentation as part of our 100+ N172 listings in this auction.
