Left-hander Philip Knell bounced between several teams over just six years in what we now classify as the 19th century's major league level, notching a pair of excellent seasons during his peak. The remainder of his career might reflect wear experienced during that top performance, as any pitcher might struggle with overuse of their prized throwing arm.
This dark St. Joseph (MO) uniform stands out in any crowd, and it appears the team decided to go 100% dark tones in the field, no doubt feeling extra heat during the dog days of Western Association competition.
This PSA GOOD 2 example has modest image clarity, with the uniform carrying the lion's share of its overall look. Corners show some rounding, with a bump or flaking on two of them. Knell appears in five N172 poses, four throwing a ball, and this is PSA's only graded example for this pose, with just two more shown at SGC. He's a tougher player indeed to find graded, let alone with a presentable image!
