One of six poses for Brooklyn pitcher Tom Lovett, who broke ground as one of baseball's earliest salary holdouts and finished his major league career with an 88-59 record and 3.94 earned run average. He peaked with 70 of those wins over just three years in Brooklyn, 1889-91, which no doubt encouraged Old Judge to provide so many poses of their emerging star.
The SGC VG-EX 4 grade follows from its dark background and moderate image, with a good look at his boots and laces against that sandy background. The centering is a bit westward, and its back shows light toning from handling. Nice mid-grade example all around, considering the fading many N172 cards endure at lower scores. The combined population reports show three total graded, with just one encapsulated by SGC!
This card appears as #280-1's reference image on page 300 of the Old Judge photography book by Miller, Gonsowski, and Masson. Love of the Game is proud to offer several cards seen in their outstanding work of research and presentation as part of our 100+ N172 listings in this auction.
