Created in 1975 by the Sports Stars Publishing Company (SSPC), this 630-card set was an unlicensed effort by hobby pioneer Mike Aronstein (father of LOTG's Operations Manager Andrew Aronstein) to challenge the Topps monopoly by producing cards of current ballplayers of the day. Designed to emulate 1953 Bowman, the "Pure Card" design was free of text, team affiliations, and other "gingerbread" as Aronstein referred to it on the face of each card. As such the cards provide a clean, minimalist presentation that has remained popular with in-person and through-the-mail autograph collectors for the past five decades. Photos for this maverick set were taken by former New York Yankees batboy Bill Hongach, the husband of well known hobby dealer Renata Galasso whose company handled collation and distribution. All card backs were written by a 17-year-old Keith Olbermann, with the last card in the set bearing his "Backs edited by Keith Olbermann" credit at the bottom. Only issued as complete factory sets, 1975 SSPC features several rookie cards of future Hall of Famers including Gary Carter, Dennis Eckersley, George Brett, Robin Yount, and Jim Rice. Cards in this complete set remain clean and highly attractive, averaging EX-MT or better across the group. A few cards exhibit a hint of toning around the edges on reverse (with the final card #630 more heavily toned), likely a result of long-term storage in an 800ct or similar box. A complete run of this landmark issue that was instrumental in helping break the Topps monopoly a few short years later.
